The college softball super regionals kicked off Thursday, and I’m here to tell you why you should be tuning in the rest of this holiday weekend and next weeks College World Series. College softball is one of the most exciting and entertaining sports to watch, and the national audience has been growing in recent years.
Unlike baseball, there is always action during the softball games, and stealing bases is quite common. This years postseason provides quite a bit of storylines that make tuning in worth it. To start, Oklahoma will be attempting to be the sixth team in history to pull off a three-peat (only Drake, Villanova, UTEP, Arkansas, and Northern Arizona have completed it). The Sooners have been an absolute juggernaut in college softball as of late. They have a 56-1 record this season and lead DI in team batting average, home runs per game, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and scoring. The Sooners just picked up their 48th straight win, which set a NCAA DI softball record. This kind of dominance is unprecedented and absolutely insane.
While Oklahoma appears to be a shoe in to win the whole thing, nothing in sports is guaranteed. Right now the Heat, who looked ready to sweep, have let Boston win three in a row and are headed to a game seven. You never know what kind of game you are going to get when you tune in. It may be a tight, 8-7 victory for Oklahoma, or it could be Florida State’s Kathryn Sandercock throwing a no hitter in their regional win.
In other college sporting news, college football kicks off in less than 100 days! Like Oklahoma in softball, the Georgia Bulldogs are the favorites yet again for National Championship, which would be a three-peat for them. However, I am starting to wonder about the culture of the team after the fourth Bulldogs player was arrested in four months for reckless driving. One of these charges resulted in the death of a player and staff member. You would think after the tragic crash, Kirby Smart would have sat his team down and shut down this behavior, but that does not seem to be the case as two new arrest have come after.
In Cincinnati sports news, it seems like the Bengals and Joe Burrow may be inching closer to a long term contract extension. All offseason the word from the Bengal’s camp has been that they expect Burrow to be around for the long term, but aren’t in a rush to hurry up and get the contract done. I am very interested to see how the Bengals and Burrow balance the line between getting payed the rate top quarterbacks are getting now a days and having a team friendly deal that will keep players like Higgins and Chase around.
That’s all I have for today’s post, enjoy memorial day.
