Why the CFP Selection Committee is a Joke

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

The CFP selection committee has officially lost all common sense. The rankings this week unsurprisingly completely favor the SEC, and the logic the committee gives behind them makes absolutely no sense.

The fact that Florida moved down just ONE spot after losing to below .500 LSU team AT HOME is RIDICULOUS. LSU is not just bad this year, but was almost down to the bare minimum of players to even play. They justified only dropping Florida one spot by saying they value their head to head win against Georgia. However, this should just justify that neither team is very good nor deserves a top ten ranking. Georgia is in no way better than Cincinnati or has better credentials. However, Marco Wilson’s shoe throw hurt UC more than it hurt Florida.

The committee found another excuse to make sure a Group of 5 team would not even be in the playoff hunt. They moved UC down again this week, this time because they haven’t played since November 21. Ohio State has only played one game since the 21st and UC has three more wins than them, but guess that doesn’t matter. It also did not matter at all when Texas A&M took three weeks off because of covid issues. But when UC has three weeks off, they must be a bad team and drop in the rankings. The other reasoning the committee used to drop UC was that they do not have any top 25 wins. Guess who else doesn’t have any top 25 wins, Georgia, and they have two losses as well. So it makes perfect sense to put Georgia ahead of Cincinnati.

Two loss Iowa State moved up yet again this week despite not even playing (but shame on UC for not playing right). Their losses were to Oklahoma State and Louisiana, but the committee says their two top 20 wins are what counts. If the committee wants to talk about top 25 wins then, explain why Coastal Carolina is still at 13. Coastal Carolina has two top 25 wins as well, and one of them is against Louisiana, the team who BEAT Iowa State. They didn’t just lose at home to them, but lost by 17. The committee said that their last minute win against .500 Troy was not impressive and is holding them back, but when Florida LOSSES to a below .500 team they stay in the top 10 (they only have 1 top 25 win compared to Coastal’s 2). It is clear that the committee will do whatever it takes to keep the Group of 5 teams from succeeding.

If this week's rankings proved anything, it is not the four best/most deserving teams that make the playoffs, but the committees four favorite teams.
