The Weekend That Was

There was quite a bit of action this weekend in the sports world. Here’s some key takeaways from the weekend that was:

1. Kansas Football snubbed

Imagine there is a SEC team that is 4-0 with two power five wins and two road wins that has looked dominant. This team would be a lock to be a top ten team. However, when the team with this resume is named Kansas, they don’t even get to be ranked.

The bias towards name brands is so obvious in the AP voting, and it’s so frustrating to see the voters continue to rank teams that have bad losses and no signature wins while excluding the teams that are doing well. The preseason rankings need to be abolished because they have way too much of a factor on rankings during the season.

2. Drinkwentz and Harsin both want to be fired

In the absolute garbage fire that was the Missouri-Auburn game, it appeared that both coaches wanted to lose their job. Everyone knew that if Auburn lost, Bryan Harsin would be gone. The Auburn boosters are dying for a reason to get rid of him. However, Eliah Drinkwentz made countless questionable decisions to sell the game for the Tigers.

With the game tied up at 14-14 and under a minute remaining, Missouri had the ball at Auburn’s two yard line. Instead of trying to punch in a game winning touchdown, the Tiger’s took two knees, one where they lost five yards, and brought out their field goal kicker on third down. Because it’s a team I cheer for, the Tiger’s missed the kick, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Missouri’s defense made a big fourth down stop, but that was overturned by a penalty. Auburn went on to kick a field goal. Mizzou got the ball back and actually had a great play that would have put them on the goal line, but instead they fumbled the ball in the endzone, ending the game.

There is no other way to describe this game other than an extremely ugly game of football. The second half consisted of 12 straight punts, 12!!! Harsin keeps his job for now and Mizzou’s lifeless team has to face the top ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Should be an interesting weekend for them.

3. Big 12 is anyone’s game

Right now the only undefeated team in the Big 12 is Kansas. If you told anyone that going into the season, they would have thought you were crazy, but now it shows how wide open the Big 12 is. Oklahoma must be really glad they’re leaving for the SEC so that they won’t have to play Kansas State anymore. The Wildcats have gotten them three of the last four seasons. Besides possibly West Virginia, there is no team incapable of making it to the conference championship game. The Big 12 race is going to be fun to watch this year.

4. Big Ten West no one wants to win

Minnesota appears to be the only team with some potential in the Big Ten West. The Golden Gophers are 4-0, but have yet to face a real challenge (Michigan State was not much of a test). Wisconsin and Purdue, two teams thought to be contenders entering the season, already have two losses. Iowa is technically in second place, but the Hawkeyes are painfully incompetant on offense. It seems like no one in the Big 10 West wants to travel to Indy in December.

5. Aaron Judge still hasn’t hit 61

As college football fans are well aware, Yankees Aaron Judge has yet to record his 61st home run of the season, which will tie him for the single season American League home run record. ESPN cut into all of their college football broadcasts with the Judge-watch every time he was at bat. They not only split the screen, but took away the audio from the football game and put on the baseball broadcast. If we wanted to watch the Yankees game, then we would be watching that instead. ESPN has already ruined enough, let us have our college football.

6. Bengals pick up first win

After a disastrous 0-2 start, the Cincinnati Bengals finally picked up their first win of the season in the Big Apple over the New York Jets. Joe Burrow looked more like his 2021 self and the offense committed much fewer mistakes. Despite the fact it was over the Jets, this was a much needed win for the Bengals. They will need to carry this momentum into Thursday Night Football when the red-hot, undefeated Miami Dolphins come into town.
