Breaking Down College Football Week 7

The Cover 3 Podcast (which I highly suggest listening too- the best CFB podcast) dubbed last weekend as “the best weekend of college football in the century”. There were meaningful games played all day and many came down to the final seconds.

After Jimbo proclaimed he would take down Sabin this summer, he came through, becoming the first former Saban assistant to take down the boss. The SEC had another crazy game, with Arkansas failing to convert a two point conversion in overtime. The game had 103 total points and was an offensive explosion.

Forget what I said about the Big 12 having good defenses, there was only offense at the Cotton Bowl in the Red River Showdown. Spencer Rattler finally got benched and Caleb William's brought the Sooners back from the largest deficit ever in Red River history.

The Big 10 secured their spot as the best conference in football, and now have FIVE of the ten (50%) teams ranked in the top ten. And guess how many the SEC has, oh yeah, two.

Note about my ranking systems: I do not rank based on brand name. If you are still undefeated and have at least an ok schedule, I am going to put you higher up for finding a way to survive and advance. If you lose I will drop you but until then you deserve a top ranking.

Playoff Predictions:

  1. Georgia

  2. Oklahoma

  3. Iowa

  4. UC

Heisman Watch:

  • Desmond Ridder UC QB

  • Bijon Robinson Texas RB

  • Matt Coral Ole Miss QB

  • CJ Stroud Ohio State QB

My Picks:

Last week I was 6/10 (60%)

(12)Oklahoma State at (25)Texas: Oklahoma State was off last weekend, and Texas lost a heartbreaker to Oklahoma. I think Texas is going to be angry from last week, but they are going to run into some problems against the Oklahoma State defense. Texas relies heavily on Bijon Robinson’s rushing, but OSU has the defense to shut him down. However, Texas also has the weapons to play through the air. They can score a lot, something Oklahoma State struggles to do. I think Texas will bounce back and win this game.

(21)Texas A&M at Missouri: Missouri is a disappointment this season. Texas A&M is coming off one of their biggest wins, and because of how bad Missouri has been, I think they will win. It might not be pretty, but I don't see Missouri upsetting.

(10)Michigan State at IU: Sparty is one of the hottest teams in the country, led by possible Heisman candidate Kenneth Walker. Michigan State needs to make sure they aren’t looking ahead to the showdown with Michigan, because although IU has not looked great, they still are not a cakewalk. I think Michigan State will win, but it will be very close.

UCF at (3)UC: UC’s playoff chances got a lot better with the Bama loss, but they need to make sure they blow everyone out. They can’t afford having a close game with any AAC team because they all have terrible records. I expect UC to win big.

Auburn at (17)Arkansas: Despite losses the last two weekends, I think Arkansas is still a really good team. QB KJ Jefferson was great last weekend, and his dual threat ability makes it hard for teams to cover him. I think Auburn is just a very average team with a pretty average quarterback, sorry Bo Nix. I expect Arkansas to come out to the home crowd hungry for a win and blow out Auburn.

(11)Kentucky at (1)Georgia: I am still extremely upset GameDay is going to this game and not UC, but ESPN worships the SEC. As much hype as this game is getting, don’t expect a really good game. Georgia’s defense is too good, and Kentucky relies pretty heavily on the run game, which Georgia can shut down easily. The Bulldogs offense is not super explosive, but the Kentucky defense is not good enough to shut them down. I expect a big Georgia win and a more boring game.

Purdue at (2)Iowa: Iowa is sitting at the number 2 spot because of their elite defense. The defense makes up for their average offense, and has 10 turnovers in the last TWO games alone. As long as the offense gets a few points on the board, the Hawkeyes will win.

(5)Alabama at Mississippi State: I would not want to be Mississippi State this weekend. You know Nick Saban is furious about his loss and will have his team ready to go. I know there is the argument that since MSU beat Texas A&M, who beat Bama, there could be a chance, but not the week after a loss. Whatever Bama is favored by, I would consider taking the over.

TCU at (4)Oklahoma: Lincoln Riley is not naming a starter yet, but how can he choose to start Spencer Rattler after what we saw from Williams last weekend. This has turned into such a spectacle that Riley stopped all media access and blacked out windows leading up to this game. If TCU had their best players, I think this could be a fun game, but right now it looks like the Horned Frogs starting QB and RB are going to be out. If that is the case, I pick Oklahoma to win.

(13)Ole Miss at Tennessee: Josh Huepel has the Tennessee offense rolling, but Lane Kiffin has his moving as well. Although I think Ole Miss has more talent, they are likely going to be tired. Two weeks ago they got beaten down at Alabama, then last weekend they had an emotional win against Arkansas. I think Tennessee, with the help of the sellout crowd, pulls the upset here.

(18)Arizona State at Utah: Arizona State has looked like the best team in the Pac 12 south, but this will be their first test in a rowdy road environment. Utah has an interesting situation with their quarterback. To begin the season Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer was the starter. However, after struggling a little bit, he left the program and now Cam Rising is the starter. Utah had a big win last weekend at USC, and this week will be the first time they play in front of a home crowd since the death of one of their players. With this momentum, I am calling an upset.

Here's to another great weekend of college football!
