Breaking Down College Football Week 12

Another week, another two coaches were fired. This week’s victims were Washington’s Jimmy Lake and Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente. This brings the total of fired coaches up to 12, insane considering the season is still over a month away from being over.

However, despite all these coaching changes, there was not much movement with the top teams. Besides Oklahoma going down, there were very few notable results.

Shootout to Baylor’s Aranda for kicking the field goal as time expired against the Sooners to win by 10 instead of 7. This seemed like a big middle finger to Oklahoma for darting to the SEC, and I love it.

The SEC might not be loving their addition of Texas and Oklahoma after this weekend. The Sooners lost to Baylor as mentioned, but Texas’s loss was downright embarrassing. The Longhorns were defeated by 1-8 Kansas at home. Texas is certainly not back and has a long way to go.

Playoff Predictions:

  1. Georgia

  2. Ohio State

  3. Alabama

  4. UC

My Heisman Candidates:

  • Kenneth Walker III MSU RB

  • Kenny Pickett Pitt QB

  • David Bell WR Purdue

I wish the Heisman would stop just being a quarterback award. The fact that Bryce Young is the Heisman front runner makes me so mad. He has completely average stats, has struggled against the good teams, and has all the best talent around him. The award is not meant to go to the quarterback of the best team in the country. Heisman voters, please start doing some thinking before you place your vote.

My Picks:

Last week I was 6/8

(13)Wake at Clemson: What has Clemson done so far to assert themselves as a favorite over Wake? The only way Clemson has a chance is if their defense completely shuts down Wake, and considering they are averaging 44 points per game, it seems unlikely. Clemson’s offense, especially with the injury of Justin Ross, is not set up for a shootout. I expect Wake to win big.

(7)Michigan State at (5)Ohio State: Another huge battle in the Big 10 East, the best conference in college football. I can not believe that Michigan State is a 19 point underdog, especially with Ohio State’s very average defense. I expect Kenneth Walker to get a lot of carries. The Buckeyes will win this game but Sparty will surely cover the spread.

Iowa State at (12)Oklahoma: Oklahoma finally collapsed against Baylor, but I expect a get right game here. It’s at home, and Iowa State has not played to expectations. I believe Caleb Williams will put up better numbers in this game.

SMU at (3)UC: This will be the first real test for UC since the Notre Dame game, which feels like ages ago. The Bearcats finally looked better last week, but against SMU they can not afford any of those turnovers they keep making. SMU has Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai at quarterback and he has thrown 37 touchdown passes, the second most in the country. However UC does have the best cornerback duo in the country, which could challenge the SMU offense. I could see UC winning this game close, but I could also see them making dumb mistakes and almost blowing it. Ultimately I will take the Bearcats to win.

Nebraska at (19)Wisconsin: Wisconsin has turned their season around and won five in a row. Nebraska has elected to keep Scott Frost around another year, despite them only winning three games so far this season. Even though the Cornhuskers have had the worst luck at the end of games, they have continued to play hard. I think this will be a close, gritty, Big 10 game, but Wisconsin will win.

(21)Arkansas at (2)Alabama: Somehow Alabama will manage to only play four true road games, and has all of their tough ones at home. I think Nick Saban has realized that even if Alabama loses to Georgia, if they put up enough style points the committee may put them in. I see a blowout coming in this game.

(11)Baylor at Kansas State: *upset alert* After a huge win last weekend, I see Baylor being upset this weekend. Kansas State has won four in a row and is very physical. I think K State will win in a close one.

(4)Oregon at (24)Utah: This will likely be the first of two matchups between these teams in coming weeks. Utah switched quarterbacks to Cam Rising, who has taken the team to a new level. Oregon, since the huge OSU win, has looked very average. Utah is a tough place to play, and I think the Utes will pull off the upset.

(9)Oklahoma State at Texas Tech: We’ve been talking about how good the Cowboys defense has been, but last week the offense put up a 60 burger. Texas Tech has been playing tough, and walked off on a 61 yard field goal last weekend against Iowa State. Tech may be scrappy and put up a fight in the first half, but I think OSU will pull away in the second half.
